About Us - Overview
Education plays a vital role in efforts to alleviate poverty in developing nations. Unfortunately, a very small percentage of the population in developing nations acquire sufficient amounts of quality and relevant education that would prepare them to effectively contribute in bringing the desired development to their societies. Kenya is one such nation.
At independence in 1963, illiteracy, together with poverty and disease were identified as the the country's three greatest enemies, hence the focus of Kenya's development goals. To date, despite spending slightly over 33% of the national budget on education, the sector still reels from enormous challenges.
In Kenya, high school education is not free. Both public and private high schools cost hundreds of dollars in tuition each year. This means roughly two-thirds of Kenyans will not finish school because they are too poor to pay until completion. This is particularly true in the Kuria District of Kenya.
Kusoma International - Laurenti Mohochi Educational Foundation
Kusoma International - Laurenti Mohochi Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to enable access to quality education for children of impoverished and marginalized communities (particularly in the Kuria District of Kenya).
It was Laurenti Mohochi's dedication and tireless efforts to provide his children with an education that ultimately inspired his son, Sangai Mohochi, to found Kusoma - LMEF in his honor.
Our Vision
The vision of Kusoma International - Laurenti Mohochi Educational Foundation is that all underserved children - regardless of gender - will, through education, have a positive impact on their community and the world.
Our mission
The mission of Kusoma International - Laurenti Mohochi Educational Foundation is to empower impoverished and marginalized communities by enabling all children access to quality education, in order to develop their full capabilities and equip them well to fight poverty, ignorance and disease in their communities and the world.
Our goals
The goals of Kusoma International - Laurenti Mohochi Educational Foundation include:
- To offer scholarships that would enable young boys and girls from poor families to acquire an education and by so doing, to uplift themselves as well as their families.
- To offer the youth in poor communities an opportunity to participate in community service through programs that touch on guidance, career, and health education in light of the HIV/AIDS prevalence in the region.
- To ultimately build model schools that provide affordable and quality education.
